Key Achievements and Awards
For the last 40 years, we have received many awards in Sri Lanka and at the international level:
“Mangala Gamana” (Wedding Journey): Directed by Lakshan Film Institute in 2014, won the Guinness World Record for producing and directing the fastest film in the world. It also received the “Royal Reel Award” at the 2015 Canada International Film Festival and was appreciated at film festivals in Italy and Singapore.
“Salakuna” (Symbol): Selected and screened in Los Angeles to qualify for an Oscar Film Award.
“1st and 2nd”: Won the Nobel World Record as the film produced by the smallest team in the world. It was a finalist at the Prague International Film Festival and won a Special Award at the CANNES FILM AWARDS (France) in 2024, along with an “Official Selection” award at the Hollywood Best Indie Film Awards.
Institutional Recognition
Global Change Makers Award: Awarded for outstanding leadership in Art and Culture in Bangkok, Thailand (Jan 2024).
Professional Memberships: Member of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television (Member No. 064382).
Individual Honors: Director/Producer Nandana Hewapanna was honored by the International University of Morality Inc. (USA) in 2024 and is a member of the International Human Rights Council (IHRC/MEB/0079).
PBS Invitation: Our Director and Subtitle Editor were invited by AMERICAN EXPERIENCE on PBS to attend “The American Vice President” preview and discussion in September 2024.
Current Projects
Three films are scheduled to be screened within the next six months in Sri Lanka, and a new teledrama titled “Mawupiyo” is currently in production.
Mr. Nandana Hewapanna, the Film Director of Lakshan Films, was invited to the United States by Mr. Jean Prewitt, President and CEO of the Independent Film & Television Alliance (IFTA), for the 45th and 46th editions of the American Film Market (AFM).
The AFM is the world’s largest motion picture trade event. Mr. Hewapanna successfully participated in both of the following sessions:
The 45th Edition (2024): Held from November 5th to 10th, 2024, at the Palms Casino Resort and Brenden Theatres in Las Vegas. Mr. Hewapanna attended the market specifically on the 7th, 8th, and 9th of November.
The 46th Edition (2025): Held from November 11th to 16th, 2025, at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. Mr. Hewapanna’s participation in this session marked the market’s significant return to Los Angeles. His consistent participation in these prestigious global events underscores the international recognition and creative growth of Lakshan Films.
Recognizing the World Records and international awards achieved by Lakshan Films, several prominent national leaders and dignitaries officially honored its Director, Mr. Nandana Hewapanna.
In tribute to these achievements, the President of Sri Lanka invited and welcomed him to the Presidential Secretariat, while Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajit Rohana extended a similar honor at the Police Headquarters. Additionally, the Minister of Mass Media formally received him at the Ministry of Mass Media. Furthermore, the current Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Sajith Premadasa, invited Mr. Hewapanna to his then-ministry, the Ministry of Housing, to personally congratulate and honor him.
These significant milestones and the high-level recognition they received were widely publicized, gaining extensive coverage across all television news broadcasts and leading newspapers.
In recognition of his revolutionary contributions to the field of cinema, Mr. Nandana Hewapanna was also bestowed with the ‘Kala Bhushan’ award, the highest state honor awarded to a Sri Lankan artist.” Special Award at the Cannes Film Festival, and Official Selection at the Hollywood Indie Film Festival.
The Canada Council for the Arts has extended an invitation to Lakshan Films for their Annual Public Meeting (APM). This invitation is a significant international achievement for us, and we truly value the trust they have placed in Lakshan Films.
